Ants like Wasps are a social insect and are in the same insect family. Each nest has a Queen.
Ants are primarily a nuisance - they come indoors looking for food which is taken back to the nest.
Ants can wander over all kinds of things before entering your house. This means that anything they subsequently walk over like worktops or food can become contaminated. Any food suspected of being contaminated should be destroyed.
If the infestation is suspected to be Pharaoh Ants these must always be treated by a professional because if the nest appears to be under attack it will split and new queen ants will form another nest.
