Rats have a body about 6 to 9 inches long. The tail is shorter than the body.
They are various shades of brown on the back, lighter underneath. |
Rats are mainly nocturnal. Sightings during daylight can mean a largish population. Breeding all year with litters of between 7 and 10, a female rat can have up to 5 litters a year. They live under piles of building materials, sheds and garages and can squeeze through a space about the size of a 50p coin. They will burrow in gardens. Rats will eat leftover or discarded food and chew open food containers.

Rats are a major public health menace. They urinate everywhere they go and leave droppings all over their range. They are carriers of Leptospiriosis also known as Weils Disease. See Health Protection Agency for more information. They chew insulation causing electrical short circuits with a subsequent risk of fire.
